The Problem: What Are we dealing with?
Africa faces an escalating waste management crisis, with only 4% of municipal solid waste recycled and 80% mismanaged in landfills or the environment. Africa’s waste management system is at a tipping point. By 2025, the continent is expected to generate 250 million tonnes of municipal solid waste annually, with only 4% recycled and 16% polluting the environment. In Kampala, Uganda, 46% to 56% of waste remains unmanaged, polluting water, soil, and air. This mismanagement poses significant environmental, health, and economic challenges.
